Discourse Communities

NMSU Student
CRB
SNMAEYC

NMSU - I am a student, the language used to invite people is inviting everyone is welcome, no one is kept out unless you do something wrong at the university.

CRB - A board member, ads are on TV to join, fill out application and interview, everyone encouraged to join, meet once a month, dress is casual, attending training to learn about abuse, laws, etc.

SNMEYC - I am a member, everyone is welcome to join if you work at a child care center, pay yearly dues, president mails out news letter to everyone to keep them informed about what is happening in child care leg, training, state meeting, etc.

  1. These are great communities. Try focusing on ways you use language within these groups. For example, as an NMSU student the words Aggie and syllabus, the image of Pistol Pete, and Aggie Mountain have meanings that you understand that probably a student at a university in Colorado would know.
I'm betting you probably also use specialized language at the day care center and at CRB. How does that language (jargon) affect your group? Does it keep people out or does it make everyone "insiders"?
